RAID Is Not a Backup

RAID protects against a drive failing. It does nothing about ransomware, accidental deletion, a bad power supply cooking both drives, or your house flooding. Delete a file on a mirrored array and it's gone from both drives instantly.

The N100 is the reason to buy this. It's the same chip in every cheap mini PC right now, and its QuickSync engine chews through 4K HEVC transcodes that would strangle an ARM NAS. Plex, Jellyfin, a few Docker containers, all fine.
UGOS Pro is the tradeoff. It's gotten a lot better over the past two years, and for backup plus media plus Docker it's genuinely fine now. But it's not DSM. If you want the most polished software on the market you want a Synology, and you'll pay more for less hardware to get it.
Worth knowing: Synology spent most of 2025 restricting third-party drives on its newest Plus models, then reversed course with DSM 7.3 and restored support for standard WD and Seagate drives. This is the one you buy when the 2-bay isn't the answer. Eight cores and 32GB of RAM is not NAS hardware in the traditional sense, it's a small server that happens to hold four drives.
Four bays also changes the storage math. With RAID 5 across four 8TB drives you get 24TB usable and survive one failure, versus 8TB usable on a mirrored 2-bay. If you're editing video off the box, that plus dual 2.5GbE is the difference between working from the NAS and copying files back and forth all day.
