The foldable market turned over almost completely this summer. Motorola shipped three new Razrs in May, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 in July, and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold went on sale in August. Almost every "best foldable" page you'll find still leads with last year's phones.

So this list is new-generation only. Six phones, two shapes, and a price range that runs from $799.99 to $2,099.99.

Prices below were checked on Amazon on 30 September 2026 and compared against each brand's launch price. Every pick is the unlocked US model.

First, Pick a Shape

This decides more than any spec.

A book-style foldable is a normal-sized phone that opens into a small tablet. You buy one because you read, edit, or run two apps side by side on the go. It costs $1,900 or more and weighs 200 to 240 grams, which is heavier than most slab phones.

A flip is a normal phone that folds in half to fit a small pocket. The screen you use is the same size as a regular phone's. You buy one because you like the size, the cover screen for quick replies, or the fact that it props itself up for photos and video calls. Flips cost $800 to $1,500.

If you can't say what you'd do with a tablet-sized screen, get a flip. It's the cheaper and lighter mistake.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: Best Book-Style Foldable

Samsung split its big foldable into two phones this year, and the Ultra is the one that keeps the classic tall shape. Closed, it's a 6.5-inch phone you can type on normally. Open, it's an 8.0-inch screen that's close to square.

That cover screen is the reason to pick it. Older Folds had a narrow outer display that made quick texts awkward, so people opened the phone for everything. At 1080 x 2520 pixels, this one behaves like any other phone's screen.

The camera is the other reason. It's the only foldable here with a 200MP main sensor, backed by a 10MP telephoto and a 50MP ultrawide, and it records 8K at 30fps. Earlier Folds were always a camera generation behind Samsung's slab phones. This one closes most of that gap.

Amazon had it at $2,099.99, exactly Samsung's list price. It runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with 12GB of RAM, charges at 45W wired, and gets up to seven major Android upgrades.

Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold: Most Durable Foldable

Foldables have always had one weakness that no amount of screen tech fixed: the hinge lets dust in. Samsung's phones are rated IP48, which means the "4" only protects against particles bigger than 1mm. Most sand is finer than that.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is rated IP68, dust tight and water resistant down to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. If you work outdoors, go to the beach, or have ever killed a phone with pocket lint, that single digit matters more than anything else on this spec sheet.

The screens match the Fold8 Ultra in size: 8.0 inches inside and 6.5 inches outside, with Google quoting up to 3,600 nits peak on both.

The cost is weight. At 239 grams and 10.1mm folded, it's 24 grams heavier than the Fold8 Ultra, and you'll notice that in a jacket pocket. Amazon's $1,899.00 matches Google's launch price.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8: Best Flip Phone

For most people who want a flip, this is it. It has the fastest chip of any flip here, Samsung's software support promise, and a price that had already dropped below list on Amazon.

The FlexWindow, Samsung's 4.1-inch cover screen, now runs full apps rather than a short list of widgets. That changes how you use the phone. Maps, messages and the camera viewfinder all work without opening it.

The weak spot is stamina. A 4,300mAh battery charging at 25W is the smallest and slowest combination on this list, and the Razr Ultra beats it on both counts. Heavy users should plan on a top-up by evening.

At $1,049.99 against Samsung's $1,199.99 list, it's the one current-generation phone here that was selling under its launch price when we checked.

Motorola Razr Ultra 2026: Best Flip for Battery Life

Motorola's top flip is built around two things Samsung won't give you: a 5,000mAh battery and 68W charging. That's 700mAh more than the Flip8 and nearly three times the wired charging speed.

It also has the biggest, brightest inner screen of any flip, at 7.0 inches and a quoted 5,000 nits peak, and a 4.0-inch cover screen that refreshes at 165Hz.

The chip is the catch. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite, a generation older than the Gen 5 in Samsung's phones. You won't feel that in daily use for a while, but combined with Motorola's shorter update window it means this phone will age faster than the Flip8. Amazon's $1,499.99 matches Motorola's list price.

Motorola Razr+ 2026: Best Mid-Price Flip

The Razr+ takes the Ultra's best feature, the big 4.0-inch cover screen, and puts it in a $1,099.99 phone. If you mostly use a flip closed, glancing at messages and replying from the outside, that screen is most of what you're paying for.

It's a harder sell this year than last, though. The Flip8 had dropped to $1,049.99 on Amazon when we checked, which buys you a faster chip and a longer update promise for $50 less. The Razr+ still wins on charging speed (45W against 25W). Buy it if you prefer Motorola's software or that cover screen. Otherwise the Flip8 is the better deal.

Motorola Razr 2026: Best Budget Foldable

If you want a flip and don't want to pay flagship money, this is where to start. It has the same 6.9-inch inner screen as the Flip8 and Razr+, and a bigger battery than both.

You give up chip speed. The Dimensity 7450X is fine for messaging, browsing and social apps, and it'll feel slower in heavy games and long 4K recordings. Its 3.6-inch cover screen also handles quick replies rather than full apps comfortably.

At $799.99 it matches Motorola's list price and costs $250 less than the Flip8.

Why the Galaxy Z Fold8 Isn't Carded

Samsung also sells a standard Galaxy Z Fold8 this year, with a wider 7.6-inch 4:3 inner screen and a 5.5-inch cover screen. Its US list price is $1,899.99 for 256GB.

When we checked, Amazon's listing for the 256GB Graphite model was $1,999.99, which is $100 over Samsung's own list price. We don't recommend a listing priced above what the manufacturer charges. If the wider shape appeals to you, check Samsung's current price before you buy anywhere.

How to Choose a Foldable Phone

Look at the dust rating, not just the water rating

Most foldables are rated IP48. That 8 means water resistance to 1.5 meters, while the 4 only covers solid objects bigger than 1mm, so fine dust and sand are not covered. Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold, at IP68, is the exception on this list. If your phone lives in a work bag, a beach tote or a toolbox, that matters.

Count the software years

A $2,000 phone should last. Samsung and Google both promise up to seven major Android upgrades on their 2026 foldables. Motorola's update window has historically been shorter, so check its policy for the exact model. That doesn't matter much in year one, and it matters a lot in year four.

Decide how much you'll use the cover screen

On a flip, the cover screen is where you'll spend a surprising share of your time. The Flip8's 4.1-inch FlexWindow and the Razr+ and Ultra's 4.0-inch panels run full apps. The base Razr's 3.6-inch screen is better suited to notifications and quick replies.

Weigh it before you buy it

Book-style foldables are heavy. The Fold8 Ultra is 215 grams and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is 239 grams. A typical large slab phone is in the 200 to 230 gram range, and none of them fold. If you can, hold one in a store before ordering.

Plan for a case and a screen that scratches

Inner foldable screens use a plastic top layer over ultra-thin glass. They mark more easily than a normal phone's glass, and fingernails can leave dents. Don't put your own screen protector on the inner display. The factory-fitted layer is part of the screen, and peeling it can damage the panel.
