A kids tablet has one job: survive a child while keeping the wrong apps out. Raw speed barely matters. A drop-proof case, a replacement guarantee and parental controls a tired parent can actually set up matter a lot.

That's why Amazon's Fire Kids line keeps winning this category, and why the only serious alternative here is a Samsung bundle built the same way. Below are the four worth buying, plus the costs nobody puts on the box.

This is the one most families should buy. The 13th-generation Fire HD 10 Kids launched at $189.99, and at $114.99 it costs about what the 8-inch model used to.

The screen is the reason to spend more than the HD 8. It's a 1920 x 1200 panel, so cartoons and picture books look crisp, and it's large enough that siblings can watch together in the back seat. Inside, the octa-core MediaTek chip and 3GB of RAM handle kids' games and video fine.

The guarantee is the real value, though. Amazon's 2-year worry-free policy covers drops and spills with a replacement, no questions asked. With a four-year-old, that's worth more than any spec on the box.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids (2024): Best Budget Pick

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids (2024)

4.5/5$74.99

Pros

  • Lowest price here, with the same 2-year worry-free guarantee
  • 3GB of RAM, 50% more than the previous HD 8
  • Light enough for small hands at 8 inches
  • Up to 13 hours of rated battery life

Cons

  • 1280 x 800 screen looks soft next to the HD 10
  • 32GB fills quickly with downloaded shows

For a preschooler's first tablet, this is the smart buy. At $74.99, it costs about half of its usual list price and still includes the kid-proof case and the replacement guarantee.

The 2024 refresh bumped RAM to 3GB, which fixed the stutter older HD 8s had when switching apps. The screen is the compromise. At 1280 x 800, text is visibly less sharp than on the HD 10, which matters less for a three-year-old watching cartoons than for a seven-year-old reading.

One tip: add a microSD card. Downloaded shows for a road trip eat 32GB faster than you'd think.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro 64GB (2024): Best for Older Kids

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro 64GB (2024)

4.5/5$89.99

Pros

  • 64GB storage paired with 4GB of RAM
  • Slim case that won't embarrass a ten-year-old
  • Kids Pro interface with web browser and app requests
  • Same 2-year worry-free guarantee

Cons

  • Slimmer case protects less than the chunky Kids version
  • Same 8-inch HD screen as the cheaper model

Older kids hate the foam bumper. The Kids Pro swaps it for a slim case and a more grown-up interface, with a filtered web browser and the ability to request apps that a parent approves from their phone.

This 64GB version is the better buy. It's only $15 more than the 32GB Fire HD 8 Kids, and it doubles the storage and adds a gigabyte of RAM. That extra space matters once Minecraft and a few downloaded seasons land on it.

Worth knowing: the 10-inch Fire HD 10 Kids Pro would normally be the pick here, but its Amazon listings showed as unavailable at publication. The HD 8 Kids Pro is the one you can actually buy.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Kids Edition: Best Non-Amazon Option

  • 11-inch 1920 x 1200 screen at 90Hz
  • Snapdragon 695, 4GB RAM and microSD expansion
  • Puffy Cover with built-in kickstand

Cons

  • More than twice the price of the Fire HD 10 Kids
  • No Amazon-style 2-year replacement guarantee

Not an Amazon household? Or your kid needs Google Classroom and apps that aren't in the Amazon Appstore? Then this is the tablet. It's a regular Galaxy Tab A9+ inside a padded Puffy Cover, and it grows up with the child. When they outgrow Samsung Kids mode, it's simply an Android tablet.

The hardware is a clear step up. Snapdragon 695, a 90Hz 11-inch display and quad speakers tuned for Dolby Atmos. Android Police's review called it cute but noted it struggles to keep up with heavier use, which is fair for a budget chip.

It's $260.34 on Amazon, under Best Buy's $279.99. The catch is protection. There's no free replacement plan, so a cracked screen is your problem.

What About an iPad?

Plenty of families just hand a child an iPad. The 11-inch iPad with the A16 chip is faster than anything above, and Apple's Screen Time controls are excellent.

We left it off the cards for two reasons. Apple sells the 128GB model for $349 direct, and the Amazon listing was priced above that when this guide was published, which isn't a deal worth linking. And an iPad needs a third-party rugged case and AppleCare+ to match what the Fire Kids tablets include free. If you go that route, buy from Apple.

How to Choose a Kids Tablet

Match the age, not the specs

Under seven, durability and a simple interface beat everything else. The Fire HD 8 Kids and HD 10 Kids are built exactly for that. From about six to twelve, a slimmer case and app requests matter more, which is the Kids Pro's job.

Screen time is its own question. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding screens other than video chat for children under 18 months, and about one hour a day of high-quality programming for ages two to five.

Count the subscription

Amazon Kids+ is how Fire Kids tablets fill up with ad-free books, videos and games. Each tablet includes a starter period. After that, Amazon lists Kids+ at $5.99 a month for Prime members and $7.99 for everyone else. Budget for it, or plan to cancel and manage the library yourself.

Check the guarantee

The 2-year worry-free guarantee is the Fire Kids line's biggest advantage. A standard tablet with a case doesn't cover a toddler throwing it at a tile floor. Factor a protection plan into the price of anything else.

Think about the app store

Fire tablets run Fire OS with the Amazon Appstore. Most popular kids' apps are there, but some school apps aren't. If your district relies on Google tools, the Samsung is the safer choice.

Storage adds up

Downloaded shows are the main storage hog. Every tablet here takes a microSD card, and a 128GB card is a cheap fix for a 32GB tablet.

Kids or Kids Pro? The Difference Explained

Amazon sells two versions of each Fire Kids tablet, and the names don't make the split obvious.

The plain Kids models target ages three to seven. They come in a thick foam case with a handle and stand, and the home screen is a curated, locked-down space. A child can't wander into a browser or an app store unless a parent opens the door.

The Kids Pro models target ages six to twelve. The case is slim, the interface looks more like a regular tablet, and kids can browse a filtered web and ask for new apps. Parents approve or deny those requests from their own phone.

Both carry the same 2-year worry-free guarantee. So the question is really about your child's age and how much freedom you want to give. A five-year-old who's tough on things belongs in the Kids version. A nine-year-old who wants to look like they have a "real" tablet is happier with the Pro.

Set These Up on Day One

The parental controls are only as good as the setup. A few minutes before you hand the tablet over saves arguments later.

Daily time limits. Amazon's Parent Dashboard lets you cap total screen time and set a bedtime when the tablet stops working. Samsung Kids has its own daily playtime limit, and Google Family Link covers the rest of the Android side.

Learn first. On Fire Kids tablets you can require a set amount of reading or educational content before games and videos unlock. It's one of the most useful features in the category.

Age filters. Set the content age range to match your child, not the tablet's default. A six-year-old and a ten-year-old shouldn't see the same library.

Purchases. Turn off in-app purchases or require a PIN. Kids' games are full of them.

Then check the activity report after the first week. It shows which apps and books actually get used, which tells you whether the subscription is earning its keep.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tablet for a 5-year-old?
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids at $114.99. Its thick case and 2-year worry-free guarantee handle drops, and its 1080p screen is sharp enough for picture books. On a tighter budget, the Fire HD 8 Kids (2024) at $74.99 has the same guarantee.
Is the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro worth it over the regular Kids version?
For kids over six, yes. The Kids Pro swaps the bulky foam case for a slim one and adds a filtered web browser and app requests. The 64GB Kids Pro at $89.99 also doubles the storage of the $74.99 Fire HD 8 Kids.
Do kids tablets need Amazon Kids+?
No, but it's how most families fill a Fire Kids tablet with ad-free content. Each tablet includes a starter period. After that it costs $5.99 a month with Prime or $7.99 without.
Can a kids tablet use Google Play?
Amazon Fire tablets use the Amazon Appstore, not Google Play. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Kids Edition runs standard Android with the full Play Store plus Samsung Kids mode.
Is an iPad better than a kids tablet?
It's faster and has excellent Screen Time controls, but it costs $349 at Apple before a rugged case or AppleCare+. For children under seven, a Fire Kids tablet with a free 2-year replacement guarantee is usually the better value.

Bottom Line

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids at $114.99 is the best kids tablet for most families, with a sharp screen, a case built for abuse and a 2-year replacement guarantee. Go with the Fire HD 8 Kids at $74.99 for a toddler's first tablet, the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro 64GB at $89.99 for kids six to twelve, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Kids Edition if you need Google Play.
