Search this question and you get a wall of blog posts written by mini PC manufacturers. Geekom says buy a mini PC. Kamrui says buy a mini PC. Bosgame, shockingly, also says buy a mini PC. Nobody selling a 1-liter box is going to tell you when a 30-liter box is the better purchase, so let me.

Here's the short version, and then I'll defend it.

The Answer, Up Front

Buy a mini PC if the heaviest thing you do is a browser with forty tabs, Office, Photoshop, light code, media playback, or running a home server that stays on all day. That covers most people. It covers me for about 80% of my week.

Buy a tower if you need a discrete graphics card. That's it. That's the dividing line, and every other difference is secondary to it.

Everything else (noise, desk space, power draw, cable clutter) favors the mini PC, and none of it matters if the machine can't do your work.

What a Mini PC Genuinely Cannot Do

The integrated GPU is the whole story, and it's worth being precise about where it lands.

AMD's Radeon 890M, the top integrated graphics in the current Ryzen AI 300 parts, is roughly GTX 1650 class in real games. So: a good mini PC plays esports titles beautifully and plays modern AAA games in the way a laptop plays them. If you're targeting 1440p high, or 4K anything, or you want ray tracing that isn't a slideshow, the conversation is over. You need a tower with a real GPU.

The second thing is memory. Integrated graphics have no VRAM of their own. They carve it out of system RAM, over the same bus the CPU is using, which is why memory bandwidth matters so much on these machines and why the fast LPDDR5X-8000 configurations outrun the cheaper SODIMM ones in games despite identical CPUs.

And that fast memory is usually soldered. Which brings up the part nobody in the vendor blogs wants to discuss.

The Upgrade Path Is a Trap (Sort Of)

On a tower, "upgrade" means you buy one part. GPU's too slow in three years, buy a GPU. Drive's full, add a drive. The case, the PSU and the cooler outlive two or three CPU generations, and people routinely run the same build for eight or ten years with rolling replacements.

On most mini PCs, "upgrade" means you buy a new mini PC. The CPU is soldered. The RAM is frequently soldered. There's no PCIe slot. You get one or two M.2 slots and that's the whole modularity story.

The sort-of: a handful of models (Minisforum's UM890 Pro and AI X1 among them) ship with SODIMM slots and an OCuLink port, which lets you bolt on an external desktop GPU later. That's a real escape hatch and it's the feature I'd prioritize if I were buying a mini PC I expected to keep for five years. But an OCuLink dock plus a GPU costs real money, and at that point you've assembled an awkward two-box desktop that takes up more space than a small tower would have.

Look, if the OCuLink plan appeals to you, just buy the tower. You already want a tower.

The 2026 Wrinkle: Memory Prices

Something is going on with DDR5 pricing this year, and it changes the math in a way it didn't in 2024.

A mini PC arrives with its memory already in it, bought at whatever the manufacturer paid months ago. A prebuilt tower does too. A from-scratch build pays today's price. That last row is the one people miss. Mini PCs use mobile-class chips in small chassis, so they boost hard and then settle back. A tower with a decent air cooler holds its boost clocks essentially forever. For a fifteen-minute export you won't notice. For an eight-hour compile or a long render queue, you will.

The Mini PC I'd Actually Buy

If the answer above was "mini PC," this is the shape of machine to look for: 8 cores, at least 24GB of fast memory because the iGPU is eating some of it, and a 1TB drive so you aren't immediately shopping for storage.

At $699 this is the honest middle of the market. Cheaper mini PCs exist, and most of them cut the memory to 16GB or the drive to 512GB, both of which you'll feel. More expensive ones buy you a faster iGPU that still doesn't change the fundamental ceiling.

If what you liked about the mini PC was the size rather than the price, there's a middle path people forget: a Mini-ITX build. You get a real GPU, real DIMM slots and a standard PSU in something around 12 to 20 liters. It costs more per liter than a mid tower and it's fiddlier to build. Count your displays, then check the ports

Mini PCs vary wildly here. Some drive two screens, some drive four. If you run a triple-monitor setup, confirm the outputs before you buy, because there's no adding a graphics card later to fix it.

Decide about memory before you order

Soldered memory means the configuration you buy is the configuration you keep. On a machine where the GPU is borrowing from the same pool, I would not go below 24GB in 2026, and 32GB if it's your only computer.

Think about where it lives

This sounds soft and it's the most practical thing on the list. A mini PC behind a monitor is invisible and nearly silent. A tower under a desk is fine. A tower on a desk in a small apartment is a piece of furniture. Be honest about which one you're actually getting.

Don't buy a mini PC to save electricity
